Public Management Professor, Innovative Engineers Earn Honors (NAPA)

Dr. Meghna Sabharwal, professor of public and nonprofit management in the School of Economic, Political and Policy Sciences at The University of Texas at Dallas, was recently named a fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration (NAPA).

Sabharwal is the first person to be chosen for the honor while a member of the UT Dallas faculty. Teodoro Benavides, associate professor of practice of public and nonprofit management and Dallas city manager from 1998 to 2004, was named a fellow in 2000 before joining the UTD faculty.
“I am enthusiastic about my role and look forward to collaborating with an exceptional group of NAPA fellows in our shared pursuit of better governance and working together to further the academy’s vision of justice, fairness and inclusion,” Sabharwal said.

The University of Texas at Dallas recognized a group of faculty members for their outstanding achievements recently during the Center for Teaching and Learning’s sixth annual Celebration of Teaching Excellence.

What’s your advice for someone teaching graduate students for the first time?
Less is more. It’s better to cover fewer topics in greater depth than to cover too many topics superficially. Also, set the tone for the class early. It’s important to establish a positive and respectful learning environment and communicate your teaching style, expectations and goals. Finally, create an inclusive environment and seek ongoing feedback from your students.

What is one of your favorite memories from teaching at UT Dallas?
Getting to know my students on a personal level. It’s amazing to hear about their diverse backgrounds, life experiences and the obstacles they’ve overcome to get where they are today.

Professor To Receive Doctoral Education Award

Dr. Meghna Sabharwal, professor of public and nonprofit management in the School of Economic, Political and Policy Sciences at The University of Texas at Dallas, will receive the 2022 Duncombe Excellence in Doctoral Education Award from the Network of Schools of Public Policy, Affairs, and Administration (NASPAA).

The award, established in 2014, recognizes a faculty member whose work with doctoral students is at a very high level.

EPPS Professors, Computer Engineering Senior Earn Recognition

Two associate professors in the School of Economic, Political and Policy Sciences (EPPS) have received awards from the American Society for Public Administration (ASPA).

Dr. Meghna Sabharwal, program head of public and nonprofit management, has earned the 2020 Rita Mae Kelly Distinguished Research Award. 

Teodoro Benavides, associate professor of practice of public and nonprofit management, won the 2020 Paul Van Riper Award for Excellence and Service.

Sabharwal was recognized for her work on gender-related issues and subjects significant to women’s roles in public administration and for making an impact through research on women’s lives.

Accolades: Faculty Members Earn Honor, New Leadership Role

Dr. Meghna Sabharwal, professor and program head of public and nonprofit management in the School of Economic, Political and Policy Sciences at UT Dallas, received the 2021 Outstanding Scholar Award from the Section on Personnel Administration and Labor Relations of the American Society for Public Administration (ASPA).

The award recognizes individuals who have demonstrated an exemplary record of research, teaching and service in public human resource management.
