Chemistry Professors Named Fellows of Prestigious Science Organization
The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) has elected two University of Texas at Dallas faculty members from the School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics (NSM) as fellows of the organization.

Dr. Ray Baughman, the Robert A. Welch Distinguished Chair in Chemistry and director of the Alan G. MacDiarmid NanoTech Institute, and Dr. Julia Chan, professor of chemistry and biochemistry, are among 443 newly elected fellows who will be recognized for their contributions to science and technology in February during the AAAS annual meeting in Seattle. Fellows are elected to one of 24 AAAS sections.
Chan Earns American Chemical Society Award
Dr. Julia Chan, professor of chemistry and biochemistry, recently received the 2019 Wilfred T. Doherty Award from the American Chemical Society’s Dallas-Fort Worth Section. The annual award recognizes a chemist or chemical engineer for significant achievement in chemistry research, teaching and service.

A leading expert on crystal growth, Chan has developed innovative methods for discovering novel materials from a combination of elements, with the aim of understanding the fundamental chemistry and physics of technologically useful materials.

Chan is the sixth UT Dallas faculty member to receive the honor. Portraits of all the Doherty Award winners are displayed in a gallery in the University’s Lloyd V. Berkner Hall
Chemistry Professor Recognized in Southwest Region
Dr. Julia Chan, professor of chemistry and biochemistry at The University of Texas at Dallas, received the 2020 Southwest Region American Chemical Society (ACS) Award for outstanding contributions to the advancement of the field of pure and applied chemistry.

Chan is the first UT Dallas faculty member to receive the award, which is the highest honor given by the regional affiliate of ACS. 

Chan, who joined the UT Dallas faculty in 2013, is a leading expert on the synthesis, crystal growth and characterization of novel quantum materials. She has developed innovative methods for discovering novel materials from a combination of elements, with the aim of understanding the fundamental chemistry and physics of technologically useful materials.
