Personal Statement
In October 2022, Dr. John Gooch was appointed Area Head for Communication Studies in the School of Arts, Humanities, and Technology after previously serving for six years as Associate Dean for Graduate Education and Director of Rhetoric and Writing at UT Dallas for nine.Dr. Gooch earned his Ph.D. in Technical Communication and Rhetoric in 2002 from the Department of English at Texas Tech University. He held academic positions at Louisiana Tech University and Collin College before joining the UT Dallas faculty in the fall of 2005.
His research interests include rhetoric and public address as well the rhetorics of law and policy, and he has taught courses in rhetoric, presidential public address, technical and professional editing, and professional communication. Dr. Gooch is also currently coaching "Comet Speech and Forensics," the UT Dallas speech team focusing on individual events (e.g., extemporaneous speaking) and limited-preparation debate (e.g., International Public Debate Association or IPDA format). The team competes both in Texas and also nationally.
