Prof's Human Resource Paper Wins Recognition
Prof's Human Resource Paper Wins Recognition The U.S. Academy of Management has recognized a paper by UT Dallas School of Management faculty member Habte Woldu, Ph.D., as one of the most influential papers published in the field of international human resource management during 2005 and 2006. Dr. Woldu is the lead author of “A Cross-National Comparison of Cultural Value Orientations of Indian, Polish, Russian and American Employees,” which the International Journal of Human Resources published in its June 2006 issue. Co-authors of the paper are Pawan S. Budhwar and Carole Parkes, both faculty members at the Aston Business School, Aston University, in Birmingham, England. Their paper is among 26 the international committee of the U.S. Academy of Management chose to receive its first Scholarly Research Award, which recognizes scholars who have advanced international human resource management in a significant way through a single piece of published work.
Cultural Assimilation Study Draws Intense Interest
Though recognized among “The 50 Most Frequently Read Articles” by the International Journal of Cross Cultural Management (IJCCM), Dr. Habte Woldu’s recent study actually sits in the Top 20. Woldu, a faculty member in the UT Dallas School of Management, published “A Comparative Analysis of Cultural Value Orientations of Indians and Migrant Indians in the USA” in April. Barely a month later, the study was garnering enormous attention. It’s the 17th-most-read paper among the Top 50 published in IJCCM between 2003 and 2008. “For the first time we are measuring cultural values using certain numbers—a quantitative approach,” Woldu said. “It’s a unique approach, trying to measure culture with numbers instead of words, or qualitative techniques.” Habte explains the work with an example that, for him, hits close to home.
Study Finds Culture Gap With Mexico Narrowing
The cultural divide that has existed between the U.S. and Mexico is slowly diminishing, at least among young, educated professionals, research by a UT Dallas professor has found. The study, co-authored by School of Management faculty member Dr. Habte Woldu, reveals that the cultural differences between the two nations as a whole have remained unchanged. However, when controlling for age, gender, education and occupation, the research indicates that younger, more educated, professional Mexicans demonstrate more cultural assimilation with the U.S. cultural value system. These findings could have important implications for international managers designing human resource and cross-cultural management strategies, Woldu said. The study could also enhance communication and understanding of the two cultures, he said.
