Research Areas

Blood-brain barrier failure during infectious diseases
The blood-brain barrier (BBB) is a highly specialized barrier separating the central nervous system (CNS) from the circulation. In health, the BBB tightly regulates the passage of molecules into the brain to maintain CNS homeostasis while restricting toxins and pathogens. However during many diseases the BBB fails and may contribute to disease. We investigate how bacterial and viral pathogens are able to cause these failures in the BBB during infection and cause diseases such as meningitis and encephalitis. Our work has cross-disciplinary interest as the BBB also fails during various neurodegenerative diseases.
